Why is this the best BLT in the world?

The Coast Guard traces its hockey roots back to the onset of World War II. It was at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Maryland that the “Cutters” were formed. This team holds particular distinction as having six players go on to the Hockey Hall of Fame and/or American Hockey Hall of Fame. We strive to continue this tradition of excellence with exemplary poise and commitment that the “Greatest Generation” would be proud of. Comprised of active duty, reserve, civilian, veterans, and dependents, we participate in the Public Service Hockey league in DC. Additionally we have helped over 125 players of all levels participate in various public service and exhibition games throughout the US.  We also host three annual Coast Guard tournaments (ice, floor, 3v3) bringing together over 250 members of the Coast Guard Family in camaraderie through the sport of hockey. Our oldest of which is reaching it’s 25th year. http://www.uscghockey.com.

Why we deserve to win the Westy?

Coast Guard Hockey deserves this award because we support the members of team Coast Guard who use hockey as an outlet when they aren’t devoting their lives “so others may live”. But just as important, we strive to make the communities in which they live and serve even better. Over the last year, we have helped raise over $50k in support of a number of national and local charities including the Coast Guard Foundations “Fallen Hero Fund”, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the Pediatric Burn Unit at the Boston Shriner’s Hospital.  Additionally, our members routinely volunteer with local programs including the Washington Wheelers Blind Hockey team, and several teams from the American Special Hockey Association. Run by members of the US Coast Guard, we are completely self funded as  hockey is not recognized by the US Armed Services Sports Council. We raise a lot of money for others, but keep the bare minimum to function. We play the game because we love it and our proud of what we do!

I would like to vote for the Coast Guard Hockey, they make an effort to come to our charity hockey tournament in Maine and helped us raise $10,000 last year for the Shriners Hospital Burn Unit in Boston. These guys come to play and help. A great dedicated team to their community and others. We put in our vote that they win the award money to help them.

Coast Guard Hockey is a team in every sense of the word; a group of revolving players that spans decades, all devoted to country, service, community, love of the great game of hockey, and the sense of pride we get from donning the jerseys, lighting the lamp, and making big saves in the tradition of our predecessors in the U.S. Revenue Cutter, Lighthouse, and Lifesaving services.

We travel all over the country to represent our organization in various military, first responder, and charity affiliated ice, dek, and roller hockey tournaments. We liaise with local NHL teams and non profit associations to raise funds and awareness for initiatives that mean something to our military and local communities. At the end, we go back to carrying out the work of the world’s premier maritime service with the bruises, stitches, and memories earned in the heat of battle. Importantly, we don’t publicly complain about USA Hockey, because that’s just un-American.

Coast Guard Hockey helps build team work quick thinking and strategy, all those things that are needed to help make them the strong officers off the future. This plays to the safety of our country.
