Why is this the best BLT in the world?

It’s a bunch of guys aged 32ish-67ish who have been getting together every week to draw poker chips out of a bag, have a beer, and play hard against each other. They have had the exact same ice time, on the exact same day, for 25+ years. They are a family, not a team.

Why we deserve to win the Westy?

I started playing Purple Turkeys when I was 29 (3 years ago) and had never laced up a pair of skates for a game in my life. It was always something I had wanted to do, but unfortunate medical conditions dictated I wasn’t allowed to play contact sports. My father was a great young hockey player, but injuries ended that path, and my grandfather has two NCAA championships with Michigan under his belt.

I walked into the dressing room for the first time, with my father’s hand me down pick up gear (he had hip surgery and had to stop playing) and it was just like walking into a family function. Everyone was welcoming and didn’t care that I had never played.

They have nurtured me, and taught me how to play hockey, and have become great friends in the process. It’s built in to the community. I am
a teacher at the local school and if you say you play Purple Turkeys, some kids know because their grandpa, or their dad used to play it.

It’s parents, kids, business owners, retirees, doctors, farmers, and educators.

It’s where my 3 month old daughter first saw her dad play, it’s where my wife first saw her husband play, and it’s where I asked my father-in-law for his daughter’s hand in marriage during a shift change.

The guys in this dressing room are literally one of a kind, and make, not the best beer league team, but family.
