Why is this the best BLT in the world?

How can I answer this question? It’s like answering, “why does cold beer taste so good after a close victory?” There may be 15 guys on the team and they all may provide 15 different answers, but the one line they all will have in common is, “It just does.”

The Charlotte Rebels have been playing together for several years. We’re a group of aging guys from different backgrounds who have had some success in the various beer leagues. However unlike many teams we face we chose to stick together and bravely face the younger and quicker teams. Our core remained unchanged and the camaraderie is as strong as ever. So much in fact when USA Hockey writer Greg Bates reached out to the Extreme Ice Center and asked which team he should interview the hockey director pointed him our way.

As the article states, we aren’t afraid to have a little fun…

Why we deserve to win the Westy?

We deserve to get back to the winning ways!

As stated above in the previous answer, we’re a bunch of aging players who have been together for many years. Our camaraderie is second to none and rather than bringing in younger and faster skaters we stick together. We are known as “the team” in the tavern because for every hour on the ice we spend at least two as a group. This team atmosphere is the epitome of beer league hockey.

I have been playing with the Charlotte Rebels since the summer of 2012. I started playing ice hockey with full gear in a men’s league when I turn 40 years old. I started by attending “learn to play” classes at a nearby rink which led to pick up games right after. I did that for two years before I felt like I was ready to join an actual team and play real games with referees. It turns out, my only regret was not joining a beer league hockey team when I turned the legal drinking age of 21.

We aren’t the prettiest team in the league, but I don’t know of another team that has as much fun playing the game, or celebrating/commiserating afterwards.

This group defines the word “team.” A collection of players from all walks of life, that unite in a common goal…but has a lot of fun in the process.

    And beer.
